USGS는 콜로라도 강 유역에서 생산된 광범위한 USGS 과학 데이터에 파트너들이 더 쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 ‘콜로라도 강 유역 과학 협업 웹사이트(Colorado River Basin Science Collaboration Portal)를 개설했다.

캐서린 담(Katharine Dahm) USGS 록키 마운틴(Rocky Mountain) 지역의 부국장은 “새로운 USGS 콜로라도 강 유역 과학 웹사이트는 USGS 및 데이터 사용자와 과학 데이터를 발표, 토론, 통합 및 전파할 수 있는 포럼을 제공한다"라며 "통합 데이터에 대한 접근성 향상을 통해 물 문제가 증가하는 가운데 콜로라도 강 시스템에 대한 이해를 높이고 협력적인 관리를 계속할 수 있다"고 말했다.

2000년 이후 콜로라도 강 유역은 역사적인 가뭄을 겪고 있으며, 이 가뭄은 강, 스노우팩, 지하수 공급뿐만 아니라 산림 건강, 서식지 및 화재 위험에도 영향을 미치고 있다. 

이 가뭄은 농산물 피해만 약 280억 달러를 발생시킨 이 지역 역사상 최악의 가뭄이다.

이 웹사이트는 전문 지식과 지역 데이터 세트를 결합해 콜로라도 강 유역의 가뭄 영향과 관련된 의사 결정을 지원하는 실행 가능한 정보를 제공하기 위한 새로운 통합 과학 노력의 일부이다. 

USGS 전문가들은 연방, 주, 부족 및 지역 이해 관계자들과 함께 지속적으로 협력하여 유역의 장기적인 가뭄 영향과 미래의 과제를 관리, 적응 및 완화하는 데 도움이 되는 실행 가능한 과학의 전달을 개선하고 있다. 

콜로라도 강 유역 과학 웹사이트의 초기 공개에 포함된 예비 콘텐츠는 현재의 과학과 미래의 과학 요구에 대한 토론을 용이하게 하기 위해 고안되었다.

USGS provides easy access to Colorado River science with new online portal

The Colorado River Basin Science Collaboration Portal evolved from the need by partners for better access to the wide range of USGS science produced across the basin. 

“The new USGS Colorado River Basin Science Portal provides a forum for presenting, discussing, integrating and disseminating science with users of USGS and partner data,” said Katharine Dahm, Deputy Regional Director, USGS Rocky Mountain Region. “Through improved access to integrated data, we can deepen understanding and continue collaborative stewardship of the Colorado River system amid mounting water challenges."

Since 2000, the Colorado River Basin has been experiencing a historic, extended drought that has not only impacted the river, snowpack and groundwater supplies, but also forest health, habitat and fire risk. It is the worst drought in the region in recorded history, with an estimated $28 billion in damages to agricultural products alone.

The portal is part of a new integrated science effort that brings together expertise and regional data sets to deliver actionable information that supports decision making related to drought impacts in the Colorado River Basin. USGS experts continue to work with federal, state, Tribal and local stakeholders to improve delivery of actionable science that will help manage, adapt to and mitigate for long-term drought impacts and future challenges in the basin. 

“Colorado River Basin needs and issues continue to evolve as does science, technology and the ability to collaborate with all parties interested in this critical waterway,” said Dahm.Preliminary content included in the initial release of the Colorado River Basin Science Portal is designed to facilitate discussions about the current science and future science needs.
