유엔(UN) 산하 아동구호기관인 유니세프(UNICEF)에 따르면, 현재 전세계 20억 명 이상의 사람들이 안전한 식수를 이용하지 못하고 있고, 전 세계 인구의 거의 절반이 안전한 위생시설을 가지고 있지 않다. 

모두에게 깨끗한 물과 위생(Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, WASH)을 보장하는 유엔의 지속가능한 개발 목표 6(UN’s Sustainable Development Goal6, SDG6)은 이러한 격차를 줄이는 것을 목표로 한다.

미국의 글로벌 물 솔루션 기업인 자일럼(Xylem)의 파트너 및 고객 자원봉사자들은 아메리카어스(Americares), 머시 군단(Mercy Corps) 및 유니세프(UNICEF)를 포함한 1천 개의 비영리 단체를 지원하여 자일럼의 사회적 책임 프로그램인 ‘자일럼 워터마크(Xylem Watermark)’를 통해 2023년 56개국의 지역사회를 위한 깨끗한 물과 위생(WASH)에 대한 접근성 및 교육을 제공하는 데 도움을 주었다.

유니세프(UNICEF)의 미국 회장 겸 CEO인 마이클 J. 니엔후이스(Michael J. Nyenhuis)는 “유니세프는 비용 효율적인 개입을 통해 WASH의 공평한 접근을 보장하기 위해 노력하고 있으며 민간 부문은 이 목표를 달성하는 데 중추적이다”라고 가 말했다. 

니엔후이스 CEO는 이어 “혁신을 주도하기 위해 부문 간 전문지식을 하나로 모으는 ‘자일럼 워터마크(Xylem Watermark)’와 같은 프로그램은 SDG6를 달성하기 위해 솔루션을 더 빠르게 움직이고 확장하는 데 도움을 주고 있다”고 덧붙였다.

‘자일럼 워터마크(Xylem Watermark)’는 동료 및 파트너의 전문지식과 기술을 결합하여 중요한 물 문제에 미치는 영향을 촉진시키고 있다.

2023년 자일럼 직원들은 56개국에서 18만3천 시간 이상의 자원봉사를 하여 89%의 기록적인 참여율을 기록했다. 동료들은 △기술 기반 자원봉사 활동 △서비스가 부족한 지역사회를 위한 WASH 솔루션 설계 및 구현 △교육 및 멘토링을 통한 역량 강화 등에 참여했다.

자일럼은 글로벌 비영리 단체들과 함께 모로코, 칠레, 중국, 튀르키예, 필리핀, 리비아에서 발생한 지진, 수해 등 자연재난 지역에 긴급 수처리 및 배수 솔루션(dewatering solution) 등 프로보노(Pro-bono, 전문가들이 자신의 전문성을 활용해 사회적 약자와 소외계층을 돕는 활동)에 제공하는 등 30건의 재난에 대응하여 인도주의적 지원을 제공했다.

동료들은 1천 개 이상의 단체와 함께 자원봉사를 했고 ‘자일럼 워터마크(Xylem Watermark)’는 전 세계 지역사회에서 물과 관련된 원인을 연구하는 148개 비영리단체에 지역사회 보조금 또는 매칭 기부금을 제공했다.

Volunteers Help 1,000 NGOs Drive Impact in 56 Countries

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Currently, more than 2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water, and nearly half of the global population does not have safe sanitation.1 The UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 6 ? ensuring clean water and sanitation (WASH) for all ? aims to close this gap.

In 2023, volunteers from Xylem (NYSE: XYL), its partners and customers supported 1,000 nonprofits, including Americares, Mercy Corps and UNICEF*, to help deliver WASH access and education for communities in 56 countries through Xylem Watermark, the Company’s corporate social responsibility program.

Xylem Watermark combines the expertise of colleagues and partners, and technology, to catalyze impact on critical water challenges:

In 2023, Xylem employees in 56 countries volunteered more than 183,000 hours, a record participation rate of 89%**. Colleagues participated in skills-based volunteer initiatives, designing and implementing WASH solutions for underserved communities, and building capacity through training and mentorship.

Together with global nonprofit partners, Xylem provided humanitarian aid in response to 30 disasters, including the pro-bono provision of emergency water treatment and dewatering solutions in response to disasters in Morocco, Chile, China, Turkiye, the Philippines, and Libya.

Colleagues volunteered with more than 1,000 organizations, and Xylem Watermark provided community grants or matching donations to 148 nonprofits working on water-related causes in communities around the world.
