서번트렌트(Severn Trent)는 노팅엄셔(Nottinghamshire) 북쪽 지역의 물공급량을 늘리기 위해 신규 관로 매설 프로젝트를 추진한다고 밝혔다.

서번트렌트는 더웬트 밸리 수로(Derwent Valley Aqueduct), 노팅엄셔 서쪽의 스트렐리 저수지(Strelley Reservoir)와 노팅엄셔 북동쪽에 위치한 레드힐 저수지(Redhill Reservoir)까지 연결하는 16㎞ 길이의 새로운 관로 매설을 발표했다.

성인용 자전거 바퀴 보다 관경이 더 큰 신규 관로는 해당 지역에 일일 최대 2천500만 리터의 물을 추가로 공급해 관로의 회복탄력성을 높일 계획이다. 이는 대형욕조(full bathtubs) 13만 개를 채울 수 있는 양이다.

이를 통해 서번트렌트는 보어홀(boreholes)에서 필요한 물의 양을 줄이고 향후 저수지에서 더 많은 물을 취수할 수 있게 돼 인구 증가나 더운 날씨로 인해 발생할 수 있는 수요 변화를 고려할 수 있다.

이번 신규 관로 매설 프로젝트는 서번트렌트의 2024년 프로젝트 중 가장 큰 프로젝트이다.

네일 러셀(Neil Russell) 서번트렌트 프로젝트 관리자는 "새로운 관로는 서번트렌트의 물공급에 큰 도움이 될 것이며 노팅엄셔 북쪽 지역의 수천 가구에 지속적인 물공급을 확보하고 향후 수요 증가에 대비해 관로를 확보할 것"이라면서 "기후 변화와 인구 증가의 영향으로 인해 고객을 위해 이러한 방식으로 계속 투자하는 것이 그 어느 때보다 중요해졌다. 서번트렌트는 또한 보어홀이 환경에 미칠 수 있는 장기적인 영향을 고려하여 보어홀에 대한 의존도를 줄이기 위해 노력했다"고 말했다.

서번트렌트는 유틸리티 인프라 및 엔지니어링 서비스 회사인 어보브(Avove)와 협력할 계획이다. 어보브는 운영 중단을 최소화하고 지속 가능하고 비용 효율적인 솔루션을 제공하기 위해 관로 경로를 따라 기회와 효율성을 식별하기 위해 몇 달 동안 서번트렌트 협력해 왔다.

어보브의 프로젝트 팀은 지역 사회에 미치는 영향을 최소화하고 생물 다양성을 개선하기 위해 노력할 것이며, 프로젝트 전반에 걸쳐 고객에게 진행 상황과 각 영역에서 작업이 시작되기 전에 진행되는 모든 드롭인 세션에 대한 최신 정보를 제공할 것이다.

New £32m pipeline to boost water supply for customers in North Nottinghamshire 

A new £32m pipeline project is set to boost water supplies for Severn Trent customers in North Nottinghamshire.

The water company has announced the construction of a new 16km pipeline that will link the Derwent Valley Aqueduct to Strelley Reservoir to the west of Nottingham, and Redhill Reservoir in the north-east of the city.

The new pipeline, which will be slightly wider in diameter than the size of a wheel on an adult bike, will boost the resilience of the network by providing up to an extra 25 million litres of water per day to the area, the equivalent of over 130,000 full bathtubs. 

This will enable Severn Trent to reduce the amount of water it takes from boreholes and allow them to take more water from reservoirs in the future, accounting for changes in demand which could be caused by population growth or warmer weather.

The pipeline is one of the biggest projects that Severn Trent will be starting in 2024. 

Severn Trent project manager, Neil Russell, said: “The new pipeline will be a great addition to our water supply network, securing a continuous supply of water to thousands of households in North Nottinghamshire and future proofing the network against any increases in demand.  

“With the effects of climate change and population growth, it’s never been as important to continue to invest in this way for our customers. We’ve also made a commitment to reduce our dependency on boreholes because of the long-term impact these can have on the environment.

“It is a project where the general public may not even notice the main benefits, and that’s the whole point in a weird way - our customers turn on their taps to receive our wonderful water and this project will make sure they can continue to do this for many years to come. It will always be there for them.”

Work is set to start in January, with Severn Trent using technology such as tunnel boring machines where possible so they can lay pipes within tunnels beneath busy areas such as the A610 and the railway near to Hucknall. 

Neil added: “During this two-year project, it is our priority to keep traffic disruption to a minimum for everyone where possible – using equipment such as tunnel boring machines to complete this work as quickly, and as safely as possible.

“Much of the route will be through private rather than public land, and our roadworks will only take place on or near main highways where absolutely necessary, ensuring we deliver this important project to our customers with minimal disruption.”

Severn Trent will be working with utilities infrastructure and engineering services company Avove to deliver this project. The company has been working alongside Severn Trent for several months to identify opportunities and efficiencies along the pipeline route to minimise disruption and deliver sustainable and cost-effective solutions.

Avove’s project team will work to minimise the impact on the local community and improve biodiversity, and throughout the project, they will keep customers updated on progress being made, and any drop-in sessions taking place before work starts in each area.
