아랍에미리트(UAE) 두바이 수전력청(Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, DEWA)은 12월 7일(현지시각) UAE 물구호재단(UAE Water Aid Foundation, Suqia UAE)이 '제4회 무하마드 빈 라시드 알 막툼 글로벌 워터 어워드(The 4th cycle of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award)'를 개최했다고 밝혔다. 

이번 행사는 총 상금 100만 달러로, 재생 가능한 에너지를 사용한 물의 생산·분배·담수화·정제를 위해 혁신적인 기술과 프로토타입(Prototypes)을 개발하는 조직과 연구센터 등의 성과를 인정하기 위해 열렸으며, 전 세계의 소외되고 고통받는 지역사회가 직면한 물부족 문제에 대한 해결책을 찾는 것을 목표로 한다.

사이드 모하메드 알 타예르(HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer) DEWA의 MD · CEO는 "이 상은 UAE를 넘어 전 세계에서 도움이 필요한 사람들에게 도움을 주는 지도자의 이름을 담고 있다"며 "이 상은 재생 가능한 에너지를 사용해 물부족 문제에 대한 실용적이고 지속가능한 해결책을 개발하는 조직과 개인을 격려하고 인정함으로써 UAE의 노력을 강조한다"고 말했다.

그는 이어 "이번 행사는 세계가 직면한 도전에 대한 해결책을 제공하고 지속가능한 발전을 이룰 수 있도록 돕는 데 적극적으로 기여하는 UAE의 접근 방식을 따른다"며 "3회에 걸친 지난 어워드 기간 동안 우리는 태양열, 풍력, 바이오매스, 수력, 삼투압, 지열 기술 등 재생 에너지원을 사용한 담수화 및 정화 부문의 혁신적인 프로젝트를 위해 22개국에서 온 31명의 수상자에게 상을 수여했다"고 덧붙였다.

알 타예르 MD · CEO는 이 상에 대한 관심과 높은 투표율뿐만 아니라 기업과 연구센터, 기관 등이 제시한 혁신의 품질에 대해 칭찬했다. UAE 물구호재단은 설립 이후 2022년 말까지 1천 개 이상의 지속가능한 물 프로젝트를 시행해 전 세계 37개국 1천360만 명 이상의 삶에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 무하마드 빈 라시드 알 막툼 글로벌 워터 어워드의 이러한 순환은 UAE가 주최하는 COP28 기간 동안 지속 가능성의 해(Year of Sustainability)에 시작된다는 점에서 중요성을 보인다.

알 타예르는 "두바이는 혁신의 목적지이자 전 세계 창의적인 사고의 중심지가 됐다"며  "두바이를 넘어 우리는 함께 변화를 만들고 더 많은 지역사회의 삶을 개선할 수 있다"고 강조했다.  

무하마드 압둘카림 알 샴시(Mohammed Abdulkareem Al Shamsi) UAE 물구호재단의 사무총장 대행은 제4회 무하마드 빈 라시드 알 막툼 글로벌 워터 어워드가 크게 4개 부문으로 나뉜다고 설명했다. 

4개 부문에는 대규모 프로젝트상(Large Projects Award)과 소규모 프로젝트상(Small Projects Award)을 포함한 △혁신 프로젝트상(Innovative Projects Award) △국가 기관상(National Institutions Award)과 국제 기관상(International Institutions Award)을 포함한 혁신 연구 개발상(Innovative Research and Development Award) △저명 연구상(Distinguished Research Award)과 청소년상(Youth Award)을 포함한 혁신 개인상Innovative Individual Award) △혁신 위기 해결상(Innovative Crisis Solutions Award)이 있다.

The 4th cycle of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award launched

Suqia UAE received applications until end of April 2024

Dubai, UAE, 7 December 2023: HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia UAE), has launched the 4th cycle of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award. With total prizes of USD 1 million, the Award aims to recognise organisations, research centres, and innovators who develop innovative technologies and prototypes to produce, distribute, desalinate, and purify water using renewable energy. The aim is to find solutions to the water scarcity challenge facing underprivileged and afflicted communities around the world.

“It is my pleasure to announce today the start of the 4th cycle of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award, which was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. This Award bears the name of a leader whose generosity goes beyond the UAE and whose helping hand reaches out to those in need all over the world. This million-dollar Award enhances the UAE’s efforts in global humanitarian work by encouraging and recognising organisations, individuals, and innovators who develop practical and sustainable solutions for the challenges of water scarcity using renewable energy. This follows the UAE’s approach of actively contributing to providing solutions to the challenges facing the world and helping less developed societies to confront challenges and achieve sustainable development. Over the past 3 cycles of the award, we rewarded 31 winners from 22 countries for their innovative projects in water desalination and purification using renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, biomass, hydropower, osmotic power, and geothermal technologies,” said Al Tayer in his speech during an event held by Suqia UAE at Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA)’s stand at COP28.

Al Tayer commended the level of interest and great turnout that the Award garnered, as well as the quality of innovations presented by companies, research centres, institutions, and innovators. The previous cycle received entries from 56 countries around the world. Last January, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum received the winners of the 3rd cycle of the Award. His Highness praised their role in combating one of the main challenges of this age, and their endeavour to achieve the Award’s objectives of encouraging research centres, individuals, and innovators from across the world to develop sustainable and innovative solutions to overcome the global challenge of clean water scarcity.

Al Tayer said that Suqia UAE, which oversees this Award, supports the vision of the wise leadership to provide drinking water to underprivileged communities around the world. Since its establishment until the end of 2022, Suqia has positively impacted the lives of more than 13.6 million people in 37 countries around the globe by implementing more than 1,000 sustainable water projects. This cycle of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award holds special importance as it is launched during COP 28, which is hosted by the UAE during the Year of Sustainability.

“Together, we can make a difference and improve the lives of more societies, out of Dubai, which has become a destination for innovators and a hub of creative minds worldwide,” concluded Al Tayer.

Mohammed Abdulkareem Al Shamsi, Acting Executive Director of Suqia UAE, explained that the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Water Award has four main categories: the Innovative Projects Award, which includes the Large Projects Award and the Small Projects Award; the Innovative Research and Development Award, which includes the National Institutions Award and the International Institutions Award; the Innovative Individual Award, which includes the Distinguished Research Award and the Youth Award; and the Innovative Crisis Solutions Award.

Suqia UAE has urged organisations, companies, research centres, innovators, and youth worldwide to participate in the 4th cycle of the Award.
