아쿠아 펜실베니아(Aqua Pennsylvania)는 10월 18일 펜실베니아 인프라 투자청(Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority)으로부터 루체른(Luzerne) 및 와이오밍 카운티(Wyoming Counties) 서비스 지역에서 깨끗하고 안전하며 신뢰할 수 있는 하·폐수 서비스를 보장하기 위한 하·폐수처리시설 개선을 완료하기 위한 자금을 확보했다고 발표했다.

아쿠아 펜실베니아는 루체른 카운티 라이스 타운십에 있는 로렐 레이크 하· 처리 계획에 대해 최대 780만 달러까지, 와이오밍 카운티 툰캐넉 타운십에 있는 리버크레스트 하·폐수처리시설을 개선하기 위해 최대 590만 달러까지 저리 융자 승인을 받았다.두 프로젝트 모두 내구수명이 다 되어가는 기존 장비를 개선 또는 교체하고 처리 공장의 신뢰성을 개선하는 데 사용될 예정이다.

마크 루카(Marc Lucca) 아쿠아 펜실베니아 사장은 "아쿠아 펜실베니아는 펜실베니아 인프라 투자청 이사회와 직원들의 지속적인 지원과 와이오밍과 루제르네 카운티의 중요한 하·폐수 인프라 개선을 통해 공중 보건과 환경을 보호하는 데 도움이 되는 이 자금에 감사한다"면서 "아쿠아 펜실베니아는 고객의 인프라 교체 비용을 최소화하는 데 도움이 되는 대체 자금원을 적극적으로 모색함에 따라 고객에 대한 지속적인 약속의 일환으로 거의 3천만 달러에 가까운 자금을 성공적으로 확보했다"고 말했다.

한편, 아쿠아 펜실베니아는 지난 9월에도 2023년 7월 인수한 PA 셰난도아 댐의 모니터링 장비 설치 및 유량계 지원을 위한 서스퀘한나강유역위원회로부터 보조금 28만달러를 확보한 바 있다.

Aqua Pennsylvania receives $13.7 from PENNVEST for two Northeast Pennsylvania Wastewater Treatment Projects

Funding is part of nearly $30 million in PENNVEST grants and low-interest loans the company has secured to serve its customers across the Commonwealth.

Aqua Pennsylvania announced today it has secured funding through the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) to complete wastewater treatment plant improvements to ensure clean, safe, reliable wastewater service in its Luzerne and Wyoming Counties service area. 

Aqua received approval for low-interest loans up to $7.8 million for its Laurel Lakes Wastewater Treatment Plan in Rice Township, Luzerne County and up to $5.9 million to improve the Rivercrest Wastewater Treatment Plant in Tunkhannock Township, Wyoming County. Both projects will be used to improve or replace existing equipment that is nearing the end of its service life and improve treatment plant reliability.

The low-interest loans are part of Aqua’s efforts to obtain alternate funding sources that balance the need for extensive infrastructure investment—especially given rising costs and evolving regulatory requirements to maintain wastewater systems—with customer costs. 

“We appreciate PENNVEST’s board and staff for their continued support and for this funding, which helps us protect public health and the environment by improving critical wastewater infrastructure Wyoming and Luzerne counties,” said Aqua Pennsylvania President Marc Lucca. “We’ve successfully secured nearly $30 million in PENNVEST funding as part of our ongoing commitment to our customers as we aggressively seek out alternate funding sources to help minimize the cost of infrastructure replacement for Aqua ratepayers.”

In September, Aqua also secured a Susquehanna River Basin Commission grant of $280,000 to support monitoring equipment installation and flow meters at a dam in Shenandoah, PA, which the company acquired in July 2023. 

Prior to this round of funding, Aqua Pennsylvania secured more than $16 million from PENNVEST since 2021. This includes two grants to eliminate PFAS, or “forever chemicals,” in three well stations in southeast Pennsylvania, and funding to expand the company’s electric vehicle fleet as part of its aggressive companywide emissions reduction goal.
