미국 캘리포니아 스타트업인 니트리시티(Nitricity)는 10월 12일(현지시각) 차세대 파일럿 시스템의 시운전 발표를 기념하고자 캘리포니아 프레몬트(Fremont)에 있는 시설에서 리본 커팅식을 개최했다고 밝혔다.

이 프로젝트는 올람 푸드 인드레디언트(Olam Food Ingrdients), 엘레멘탈 엑셀레이터(Elemental Excelator), 마데라/초칠라 리소스 컨서베이션 디스트릭스(Madera/Chowchilla Resource Conservation District)와 협력해 어린 아몬드 나무에 대한 현장실험을 지원할 것이다. 이 실험은 내년 봄 캘리포니아 초칠라에서 시작될 예정이다.

니트리시티의 새로운 파일럿 시스템은 이전 프로토타입보다 5배 더 빠른 생산속도를 낼 수 있으며, 이는 니트리시티의 기술 개발에서 상당한 발전을 보여준다. 향후 몇 달 동안 이 기술은 엄격한 성능 시험을 거쳐 올람(Olam)의 어린 아몬드 나무 현장실험 플롯에 적용할 질산칼륨을 생산할 것이다. 

니트리시티의 기후 스마트 질산칼륨(Climate-smart Calcium Nitrate)은 △전기로 비료 생산 △비료로 현장 배출 감소 등 두 가지 메커니즘을 통해 온실가스 배출을 해결한다.

니콜라스 핑코프스키(Nicolas Pinkowski) 니트리시티의 CEO는 "니트리시티 엔지니어 팀의 노력이 없었다면 이룰 수 없을 중요한 성과로서 이번 파일럿 시스템의 시운전을 발표하게 돼 매우 자랑스럽다"며 "올람과 협력해 지속가능한 미래에 대한 공동의 약속을 강조하고 기후 스마트 질산염 비료의 성능을 보여줄 수 있어 기쁘다"고 말했다.

던 리퍼트(Dawn Lippert) 엘리멘탈 엑셀레이터의 설립자이자 CEO는 "온실가스 배출의 2% 이상을 유발하는 현재의 비료 생산 방식에서 크게 벗어나, 대기와 물, 재생 에너지를 사용해 질소 비료를 생산하는 니트리시티의 획기적인 방법에 끌렸다"며 "이번 시스템의 공개는 지역 식량 안보와 농부를 위한 더 좋고 더 깨끗한 비료를 통해 지역사회에 깊은 영향을 미치는 기후 기술을 가속화하려는 우리의 목표와 맞닿아 있다"고 말했다.

리퍼트 CEO는 또 "지역 식량 안보와 농부를 위한 비료의 가격 안정을 가능하게 하는 잠재적인 지역사회의 영향에 대해 기쁘게 생각한다"며 "기후와 지역사회를 중심으로 하는 이 협력은 엘리멘탈의 가치와 일치하고 우리는 그것이 가져올 혁신적인 결과를 기대한다"고 덧붙였다.

잭 엘리스(Zac Ellis) 올람 팜스의 농업 경제학 수석 이사는 "지속 가능성에 관심을 가지는 회사로서 우리의 수명 주기 평가를 살펴보고 탄소 발자국을 실제로 줄일 수 있는 부분을 이해하는 데 있어 가장 중요한 것은 질소 사용량"이라며 "이 실험의 매력은 질소가 더 좋은 방식으로 만들어졌다는 점"이라고 밝혔다.

니트리시티는 공기와 물, 전기만으로 질소 비료를 생산하는 업체로 2018년 스탠포드 대학 대학원생으로 구성된 팀(니콜라스 핑코프스키 CEO, 조슈아 맥에니 사장 등)으로부터 설립됐다. 니트리시티는 지역과 기후에 맞는 질산염 비료를 생산하기 위해 기술을 확장하는 데 노력하고 있다.

Nitricity Commissions New Pilot System in Fremont, CA

FREMONT, Oct. 12, 2023 – Nitricity Inc., a start up electrifying the production of climate-smart nitrogen fertilizer, today announced the commissioning of their next generation pilot system. Nitricity held a ribbon cutting ceremony at their facility in Fremont, CA to commemorate the occasion. In partnership with Olam Food Ingredients, Elemental Excelerator, and the Madera/Chowchilla Resource Conservation District, this project will support Nitricity and Olam’s field trial on young almond trees, which is scheduled to begin next spring in Chowchilla, CA.

Nitricity’s new pilot system is capable of production rates 5x greater than previous prototypes, which represents a significant advancement in Nitricity’s technology development. Over the next few months, the technology will undergo rigorous performance testing, producing calcium nitrate to be applied on Olam’s test plot of young almond trees. Nitricity's climate-smart calcium nitrate tackles GHG emissions via two mechanisms: 1) electrified production of fertilizer and 2) reduced field emissions from fertilizer application.
