서던워터(Southern Water)는 사우샘프턴의 물을 보호하고 개선하기 위해 추진중인 2천500만 파운드 규모의 밀브룩(Millbrook) 폐수처리시설 개선 프로젝트의 최종 단계에 진입했다고 밝혔다.

이 프로젝트는 사우샘프턴 지역의 패류(shellfish)를 보호하기 위한 6천300만 파운드 규모의 광범위한 투자의 일환으로, 이미 빗물 저장용량을 두 배로 늘렸고 수질개선을 위한 새로운 자외선 처리 공정을 도입했다.

현재 진행 중인 작업의 마지막 단계에서는 새로운 탱크, 기술 및 배관을 추가해 현장의 처리 용량을 늘릴 것이다.

한편 울스턴(Woolston) 폐수처리시설에서 1천300만 파운드, 폴리(Fawley)의 애쉬릿 크릭(Ashlett Creek) 폐수처리시설에서 800만 파운드 이상, 마치우드(Marchwood) Slowhill Copse에서 1천800만 파운드 이상을 포함해 사우샘프턴 주변의 기타 폐수 처리 작업을 개선하기 위한 작업이 진행 중이다.

존 페니코(John Penicud) 서던워터 폐수 운영 책임자는 서던워터리는 환경을 보호하기 위해 우리의 역할을 수행하는 것이 얼마나 중요한지 인식하고 있으며 이 모든 프로젝트는 향후 몇 년 동안 패류를 보호하고 사우샘프턴 물의 건강을 개선하는 데 중요한 역할을 할 것"이라고 말했다.

이 작업은 갤리포드 트라이(Galliford Try Environment)와 비니 UK(Binnies UK Ltd) 간의 합작 투자사인 계약자 GTb에 의해 수행되고 있습니다.

Southern Water enters final stage of major £25m project in Southampton

A scheme to upgrade Millbrook Wastewater Treatment Works in Southampton has reached a critical phase as it seeks to help protect and enhance Southampton Water. 

As part of a wider investment of £63m to help protect shellfish in the area, this standalone £25 million initiative has already doubled stormwater storage capacity and resulted in the installation of a new ultraviolet treatment process to improve water quality.  

The final phase of work, now underway, will increase the treatment capacity of the site – by adding new tanks, technology and pipework. 

All of these steps will help to reduce the frequency of storm overflows in the area. 

Meanwhile work is ongoing to improve other wastewater treatment works around Southampton Water including £13m at Woolston Wastewater Treatment Works and more than £8m at Ashlett Creek Wastewater Treatment Works in Fawley and £18m at Slowhill Copse in Marchwood. 

Director for Wastewater Operations at Southern Water, John Penicud, said: 

“We recognise how important it is that we play our part to protect the environment and all of these project will play a crucial role in protecting shellfish and improving the health of Southampton Water in the coming years.” 

The work is being carried out by contractor GTb, a joint venture between Galliford Try Environment and Binnies UK Ltd 

Kennith Loftus, Project Design Lead for GTb, said, “Once all of this work is finished, the quantity of sewage treated and the quality of the final effluent leaving the site will be significantly improved. This will help to protect the important shellfish and other marine habitats in and around Southampton.”
